Volunteer Beautician/Hairdresser

3 hours session, Monday or Thursday morning, every fortnight or monthly
Role Summary
To provide a beauty/ hairdressing service as a member of the therapies team and practice the therapy which has been agreed in accordance with the policies of St Gemma’s Hospice.  The volunteer therapist provides treatment to patients, or carers. There is also the possibility that therapists can offer their services to the general public or staff in fundraising or wellbeing opportunities for the Hospice.
 
What’s involved?
  • Use your Beauty/Hairdressing skills to provide a service to patients and their carers.
  • Care could be provided in a number of settings over the Hospice including Day Services and the Wards.
  • Provide feedback, including physical or emotional condition and any adverse effects, to the patient’s Team Nurse and the Therapy manager (or delegate).

 What we’d like from you
  • Have a qualification in the skill you are offering as a volunteer
  • Good listening and communication skills
  • To have the ability to express yourself so that others understand you and respond appropriately to others
  • Self-awareness - the ability to be aware how your own behaviour impacts on others, to take responsibility for it and to change it where appropriate
  • Ability to engage with other people, individually and within a group
  • Ability to work well within a small team
  • Being respectful of others however different they are to you
  • Willingness and flexibility to undertake a range of practical duties and activities
  • An understanding that you cannot assist in the moving and handling of patients. You need to ask trained staff for assistance
  • An understanding that you need to leave a message at reception if unwell and unable to attend, giving name, date of cancellation and contact details
  • To maintain confidentiality at all times in matters relating to patients, their families and the Hospice
  • To be familiar with fire, nurse call system, health safety and reporting of incidents procedure – this will be part of your training
